Today there are 11 private prisons in the United Kingdom, managed by private companies G4S, Kalyx and Serco. These prisons are an important part in the UK's prison estate; Bronzefield Prison is the only purpose-built private prison for women in the United Kingdom, and is the largest female prison in Europe. All private prisons in the UK are regularly inspected by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons in the same way as public sector prisons.
