I've always regarded the golf sale sign at the bottom of the mound as a kind of unofficial Edinburgh landmark.

I'm not sure exactly when it started - but I can remember it being here when I was attempting ollies off the steps of the art gallery - so it's going back to 1990 at least.

And as far as I know someone has manned the sign every day since then. One can only marvel at the tenacity and single mindedness of this chap's employer.

The need for a sign operative was perchance born from a cooncil rejection of an application for erection of more permanent signage. - So this guy I think is probably breaching a zillion rules by putting the sign down to take a phone call and sip his latte. In fact, I got the sense generally that his heart wasn't entirely in the job...
