Food

Chinese food is wonderful - the food we ate was nothing like Chinese restaurants in the UK. We particularly enjoyed the spicy Sichuanese and Yunnanese cuisine. It helped that one of our party had been to China before, knew what tasted good, and could speak some Mandarin. Even so, we had to select restaurants that had menus with some English on them/and or photos of the food (as shown here). If you ordered blind in a posh restaurant you could well end up with a delicacy that is not to western taste such as chicken feet, frogs, snails, or intestines.

This Korean restaurant, in one of the huge shopping plazas in downtown Shanghai, serves food that you cook on your own burner in the middle of the table.
