Former Confederate Soldier

Several graves in the cemetery at our church are decorated with this flag and the metal marker to the side of the tombstone.  The metal marker has CSA on it for the Confederate State of America.  The flag is the first flag for the CSA, and the first one was made by my great-great-grandmother.  It was replaced soon after the civil war started since it resembled too closely the Union flag of "stars and bars."  The flag that replaced it was called the battle flag and is the familiar one that has been the center of debates and demonstrations in our country.  My 2 great grandmother was Rebecca Winboune, who is sometimes called the "Betsy Ross of the Confederacy" alluding to the lady who made the first US flag.  All of the graves of  men who fought for the Confederates in the Civil War are decorated the same as this one.  You can see Ezeikiel Hawes survived the Civil War and died in 1912 at the age of 74.
