#WorldToiletDay #2015 #wecantwait
Today marks the United Nations World Toilet Day 2015 - raising awareness of the 2.4 billion people worldwide who still do not have access to adequate sanitation.
One of IMPACT's priorities is 'Safe Water and Sanitation' - as part of our programme of action we improve sanitation through the installation of toilets in schools and in the homes of people in some of the most vulnerable communities in Bangladesh and Nepal.
The World Health Organisation estimates that inadequate sanitation causes 280 000 diarrhoeal deaths annually and is a major factor in several neglected tropical diseases; as well as contributing to malnutrition. It also estimates that at least 10% of the world’s population is thought to consume food irrigated by wastewater.
In order to combat this IMPACT runs education sessions and implement good hygiene practices in the communities and schools in which we work – raising awareness of the risks that bad hygiene practices can have on health.
Keep an eye out for our quiz on sanitation over on twitter which will be running throughout the day - answers revealed at 4pm! How much do you know?
