MonoMonday: The Door

Go and open the door.
Maybe outside there’s
a tree, or a wood,
a garden,
or a magic city.

Go and open the door.
Maybe a dog’s rummaging.
Maybe you’ll see a face,
or an eye,
or the picture
of a picture.

Go and open the door.
If there’s a fog
it will clear.

Go and open the door.
Even if there’s only
the darkness ticking,
even if there’s only
the hollow wind,
even if
nothing
is there,
go and open the door.

At least
there’ll be
a draught.

The Door
by Miroslav Holub

I always liked teaching this poem: it always provoked discussion about what it's message(s) might be, it's language and form and it provided a model for students' own writing.

On a more prosaic level, it also seemed appropriate for our day, as we spent a fair bit of it looking for a new door for our bathroom once it's been revamped. We're going for something a bit more modest than this one, at the rear of the United Reform Church at the top of our back lane.
