Moving to Spring Pastures

Each spring these cows and their calves are walked to grazing higher up the Plains. Stock is usually moved by truck nowadays, but this farming family maintains a tradition that goes way back. At least three generations assist in the drive.

When the pregnant cows were taken to the home paddocks in the winter they walked in silence, but on the outward journey both the cows and calves keep in touch with continual lowing. It is a deep, rich and wonderful sound.
