a lifetime burning

White not Green

This was parked in the garage at work today. I hasten to add that it is not owned by anyone that works in the same firm as I do!

It is the close up of the rear of a Porsche 918 Spyder - which is, believe it or not, a hybrid vehicle. But it is a bit of a different take on that category to say, a Toyota Prius. The Porsche has a 4.6L V8 petrol engine producing 608 bhp and 2 electric motors providing another 279 bhp.  So it takes all of 2.5 seconds to get to 100 km/h (62mph).....

Despite that hybrid label this is not an environmentally friendly form of travel  - it can only manage 12 miles on its electric motors alone.  But if you do start burning fossil fuels and put your foot down it will reach a license loosing (and jail guaranteeing) 217mph. One of these things was the first series production street-legal car to break the 7-minute barrier of the  Nürburgring track in Germany.  So it is scarily fast.

It only has two seats and no boot space to speak of.  While there are lovely red leather seats it looks cramped and noisy inside, I wouldn't want to take a long journey it, I am not sure I would ever be able to walk or hear properly again.  It is also not going to be much fun to use on the streets of Bristol either, with their 20mph limits and cavernous pot holes.

... and yet .... its a thing of great beauty, an amazing piece of design, and my heart can see the attraction and says yes even while my head is telling me no.
