The Durham Miners’ Gala

I stood at the Elvet Bridge/Saddler Street junction with a big crowd and watched the banners, brass bands and marchers go by.

It’s the done thing for each brass band to stop at the junction and play a song for the crowd.

We were entertained by brass bands from the old coalfields and beyond playing a huge variety of music ranging from Gresford, the miner’s hymn to brass band versions of Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’, Queen’s ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ and Lionel Richie’s ‘All Night Long’ ...

The crowd sang and danced and cheered each band in turn ...

It was a life affirming few hours ...

Hope your weekend is going well ...
