Barbican Arts Centre

I visited the Vanessa Winship/Dorothea Lange exhibitions at the Barbican today. I thought I knew a lot about Dorothea Lange, but I hadn't realised the full extent of her work (outside the well known images from the Farm Security Administration days - including, of course, the famous "Migrant Mother").  In particular I hadn't realised that she had a successful portrait studio in San Francisco for 15 years before she started photographing the effects of the Great Depression.

Both exhibitions were extensive and enjoyable - but it needed a few hours to fully appreciate them (particularly if you stayed to watch two 28 minute documentary films about Lange).

It is a while since I visited the area around the Barbican centre, and there has been a lot of building work in the area.  Work on the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) still continues, so there are still areas which are significantly disrupted.  Internally, though, the Barbican is largely unchanged (like the entrance to the arts centre shown in my blip.
