Outrage

Learned today that from April this year wildlife rescue organisations in the UK will have to destroy, not rescue, injured or orphaned grey squirrels.

It's difficult to retain a sense of equilibrium in the face of news like this but I keep in mind that, as Bill Mollison said, "evil is just rigorously-applied stupidity".

This attitude by authorities to wildlife, to nature, that it must be controlled is our undoing. Grey squirrels have been in the UK since 1876 and are no more an "alien invasive species" than I am. For many children, especially in urban environments, they are their first encounter with wildlife.
