Ruins of the Quilmes

The ruins of Quilmes are located in the valleys Calchaquíes, province of Tucumán in Argentina. They are the remains of the most extensive pre-Columbian settlement in this country. They occupy approximately thirty hectares and are located at the foot of the Alto del Rey hill.

The place was first owned by the indigenous people, later by the provincial state, later by a private concessionaire and finally, by the descendants of the Quilme people. These ruins have been partially rebuilt, so they can now be visited by tourists. They were first studied in 1897 by archaeologist Juan Bautista Ambrosetti and restored by a team under the direction of Horacio Difrieri and Norberto Pelissero, with more tourist criteria than archeology.
