Europe Day
This novel, by the late and very lamented Helen Dunmore, is about the winter of 1941 when Leningrad was under siege and Hitler’s agenda was to obliterate the town. The citizens endured great hardships with more oppression to come after the war was over. Dmitri Shostakovich’s wrote his wonderful 7th Symphony during this time. Both novel and symphony are a powerful reminder of the suffering across our vast continent. On Europe Day, 9 May 2020, there’s once again a great need for European (and worldwide) cooperation. Will we rise to the challenge?
