L2 Day 16 Teddington Riverside. This blue plaque has been put on the new development on the site that was Teddington Studios. (See extra) Film-making began in the grounds of Weir House at the end of the 19C. Various film companies developed more studios and Warner Brothers purchased the studios in 1934. During WW2 it was one of the few studios to operate producing a series of patriotic films. After the war films made featuring many illustrious actors such as Richard Burton, Kenneth More abd Joan Greenwood. When TV took off ABC bought the site in 1958 and adapted the studios for TV. In 1968 ABC and Rediffusion merged to form Thames TV which made Teddington its base for drama and entertainment. They added a new office building, a floor of which was used as the location for filming Ricky Gervais’s comedy The Office in 2001 and 2003. In 2014 the studios closed and the site was sold for residential development. There are four large blocks and some town houses. Prices start at £690,000! I have visited with a couple of friends to look round and think they are very overpriced.
TV shows filmed there included...Rainbow, Birds of a feather, This is Your Life, Opportunity Knocks, Kilroy, Morecambe and Wise, Harry Hill and Reggie Perrin .
