Fiskersfrau (Fisherwoman)

@Paesens-Moddergat

This monument was placed on March 7, 2008, as a tribute to the women of Paesens-Moddergat, who faced a difficult task after the disaster of 1883: taking care of the children and making ends meet on a meager income.

The fishing disaster was in the night of 5 to 6 March 1883. That night the fishing fleet of Paesens-Moddergat, a village near the Wadden Sea, was attacked by a heavy spring storm. During this storm, 17 ships were wrecked and 83 villagers were killed in the icy waves of the sea north of the Wadden Islands.

Luckily Leon is fine again. That's why we were on the road again this afternoon.
