Slave

This book, which I have just finished, presented by The University of Nottingham reading programme is the true story of a 12 year old girl, Mende Nazar, abducted from her tribal life (interesting in itself) in the Nubian Mountains in Sudan and sold into slavery. Seven years on she escaped to tell her story. It is estimated that there are 40 million slaves in the world today, and for me this book was an opportunity to learn more about this abhorrent trade in human cattle, and the impact it has on an individual life. Although parts of the book are distressing, it also speaks to the power of the human spirit, and how good people can make a difference, as well as recognising our own failures to protect the vulnerable. I’m glad to know more about this - It’s not often I share a book - but I felt I wanted to share this one.
Nottingham University is home to the Rights Lab which is working to contribute to ending slavery by 2030

Thank you for the lovely responses to yesterday’s post, very much appreciated
