De Rust

Today Johann closed the office doors and decided to go on a pensioner's biking outing to the Klein Karoo.

They were a group of nine bikers with two ladies who rode pillion - so eleven all in all.

They headed toward the Stompneusdrifdam (literally translated: snub nose drift/brook dam) in the Klein Karoo.
The road took them across the Outeniqua Mountain pass, through Oudtshoorn, and then to De Rust. (Meaning the place of rest)

The dam is about 5kms outside of DeRust.

Although the veld has a beautiful green tinge to it, the recent rains were not enough to make a difference in the water level of this dam, as can be seen in the image.

At least the animals can still feast on the juicy green vegetation before the winter cold and dry conditions really set in.

At the dam, the caretaker graciously offered the use of the lapa (an outdoor enclosure of reeds) which came in handy.
In this case, the lapa was covered by a roof made of reeds/thatch and housed amongst others an indoor barbeque, seating, tables, and a (unstocked) bar.
It is fairly large, and can easily accommodate about fifty people.
I guess it is a popular weekend venue for functions or parties.

While liquid refreshments were enjoyed, briquettes were lit to provide coals for the barbeque. The outing was concluded with coffee (from a flask) and biscuits before the road back home was taken.

Johann provided this image of the dam.
