Ghost Sign, Forrest Road

Our running group took a 'tourist route' this morning.  We headed along the canal and into the city centre via Lauriston Place.  This "surgical instrument makers" ghost sign is at the corner of Forrest Road as you head towards George IV Bridge and the Mound.  We looped back via Princes Street Gardens and Lothian Road.  We got back to our starting point just when the sun was really coming  out to play and it was getting warmer.

The ghost sign ad may relate to J Gardner & Son who were surgical instrument makers that established in Edinburgh in 1866 and operated out of Forrest Road and other locations. They were the primary manufacturers for the Royal Infirmary and other Edinburgh and Scottish hospitals.  The business was sold in 1943 to the surgical makers Archibald Young & Sons although the Forrest Road business continued to operate under the Gardner name.
