Nyman's Gardens

A slightly belated blip for yesterday, which was spent in Nyman's Gardens in West Sussex. It was well worth a visit and I walked with a friend around the gardens for a couple of hours enjoying the various flower beds. My friend is a keen gardener and not only knows what everything is but how to grow it too.

We went inside the house, which was badly damaged by fire in 1947 whilst the house was owned by Leonard Messel, who was in bed there at the time of the fire. What survived is now open to the public and there is a display explaining what happened. The most interesting thing for me was Leonard Messel's diary where he describes the fire and says, a few days later, that he is overwhelmed by the kindness of friends and neighbours  and that one must not love worldly or material things too much. Wise words, I think.
