Monumental

The Monday walk, a tad later than usual and the weather not looking too promising on the way out (extra) and it wasn't that great on the way back either but a break in the clouds let some sun filter through as I passed the monument to Alexander III providing a bit of light relief.

The memorial was unveiled on 19th July 1887 on or near the spot where Alexander III met his death. Various versions of his death are available but they all seem to agree that it resulted from a fall from his horse on a stormy night. Previously a stone cross marked the site but this was in ruins by the 19th century and a replacement was proposed as early as the 1840s.

Despite all this information I'm still not sure if this marks the spot where he landed or where he fell off his horse...
