Domain Express Walkway

It was a day for modern pedestrianism: the express walkway (which wasn’t moving because it’s been broken for three years), a beautiful white spiral staircase descending four floors to The Tank below the new wing of the art gallery, and finally department store escalators and lifts.

The walkway was designed for 1960s city shoppers to park and then whiz along underground for 200 metres before emerging into Hyde Park.

Unaccountably, rather than a local scene, the entrance mural adds a modern twist to John Brack’s famous 1955 painting of Melbourne commuters, Collins St., 5 p.m.

Extra: the non-operating walkway. We walked it.
