SNAKE ALERT!

This is Boelen's Python having a little rodent snack.  It is native to the mountains of New Guinea.  This one lives at the zoo in Milwaukee.

I am friends with one of the "keepers" in the Reptile/Fish house and he lets me know when they'll be feeding the snakes......I like to watch and to photograph.

They are fed dead mice as live mice can bite back and the snake might be injured.  Mice are cheap...rare snakes are not.  Sometimes new snakes need to be enticed to feed.  Instead of just laying a freshly killed mouse carcas in the cage for the snake to find it, the keeper will hold it with very long forceps and jiggle it in front of the snake until it strikes.  They get the idea very quickly...especially if they're hungry.
