Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

An immigrant.

The White Butterbur Petasites albus is currently in full flower. Perhaps surprisingly the species is not native to the UK. It was imported into Britain in 1683 as a garden ornamental. The first record in the wild was at Storthes Hall in West Yorkshire (near to my birthplace!) but it is now most commonly found in the NE of Scotland where I now live. Being, in part, of Irish descent I guess that I am an immigrant too!
