Cake or Coal?

Easter visiting has taken us through the beautiful Peak District to Chesterfield and our middle child Isaac and his family.  Hello, and then off for a walk along the nearby brook where I saw this fungus, which I don't remember seeing before.

According to Wikipedia, The inedible fungus Daldinia concentrica is known by several common names, including King Alfred's cake, cramp balls, and coal fungus.  Apparently it can be used as a fire lighter if it is thoroughly dried, or you can leave it where it is for the next funghi spotter.
