Grumpy Old Man

Off the rails

Well I was pleased to be able to take my favourite seat on the 8.57am Oban train to Glasgow this morning! It's really the seat to accompany a wheelchair user, but it's a great place to stretch the legs!

I found my booked seat on the Glasgow-London train - my Blip today is of Central Station in Glasgow - but after leaving Carlisle the train manager announced that due to disruption at Watford or somewhere the train would be terminated at Preston as there was nobody available to drive it further! And nobody to man the shop either! All part of the strike I suppose, though I hadn't realised that it was taking place today! We could then take a slower train on to Euston, but it was going around Birmingham and would add another hour to the journey! She added that we could change at Crewe for a faster train to London, but she couldn't guarantee that it would be running and recommended that we didn't try it!

So half the train swapped at Preston, but that train manager said that the Crewe change was a good option, so we did, and arrived at Euston just after 7pm. Phew! So then it was a change to the Underground to Waterloo and then the suburban line to Hampton. I was glad to get to my sister's house by 8.15 - six trains and just short of twelve hours!
