The Flying Banana

is the nickname for this Network Rail train standing at Glasgow Central platform 3.
Its proper name is New Measurement Train consisting of 2 Class 43 locos and 5 or 6 Mark 3 coaches. It is a converted Inter City 125 train the coaches house engineers monitoring hi tech equipment for measuring track gauge, alignment, twist and cant , also condition of overhead wires. It runs across main lines and others in UK on a four week cycle. I have seen it in Oban checking the West Highland line here at Glasgow probably checking the vital and heavily used West Coast route to England.
