If you can't beat them...

Tree Sparrow ( Passer montanus )

It is a while since I did a bird shot so I have settled for one of my "morning just in case shots".  I had been bird watching quite a long time before I first knowingly saw a Tree Sparrow.  In retrospect I had probably seen them but passed them off as male House Sparrows without looking at details.  I first knowingly saw them by looking at a flock of sparrows and saying (they are all male, thinking they were HS.  A large flock all male HS would be unusual so I had another look and realised they were TS not HS.

The difference between a male HS and a TS (both sexes of TS are the same).  Starting at the top;  TS has a chestnut crown while a HS has grey.  The TS has a white cheek with a black spot HS has a grey cheek.  The bib is a little more complicated.  The TS has a small clearly defined black bib, the HS in winter has a small not as clearly defined bib and in summer a large black not clearly defined bib running right down on to the breast.

The white flowers are Osmanthus delavayi and the brown parts are flowers dying back.
