Orienteering Atop Slieve Bawn

We drove to the top of Slieve Bawn this morning for the Long Distance Event in the Irish Championships.  There were murmurings in the carpark from those in the know about windblown and deep ditches, no exaggeration.  If this event had been back home it would go on our 'Don't go back' list.  The area has lost a large number of trees so several parts were impassable due to fallen trees.  Those deep ditches were really deep and, in places, quite perilous to descend into and climb out of, not a great deal of fun was to be had.  We are both picking out thorns too.

It was a shame to end on a poor area because we have really enjoyed our few days amongst the hospitality of the Irish orienteers.  They don't take things too seriously and they are always ready with a , 'So how are you today?'  It's been a good example of how to keep a Championship reasonably low key and inexpensive.

Back at the apartment and the sun has come out, hooray!  The washing is out, we have bathed and relaxed with cuppas.  Shortly, I will prep for dinner and then the evening will see us packing.  Tomorrow we are booked into the National Famine Museum en route to our cottage in Sligo.
