Something blue(ish)

We went for a picnic among the bluebells and found even more colour than we expected. These tiny funnel-shaped fungi, only a millimetre or so  across, stain the rotten timber they inhabit a rich viridian hue that almost glows among the leaf litter on the woodland floor. Harder to see were the miniature cups themselves (enlarged in the collage) but  my sharper-eyed daughter-in-law spotted a few. 

Back in the 19th century skilful craftsmen used the colour-stained wood (called green oak) for intricate veneers in a technique known as Tunbridge ware. Woodworkers today still value its unusual effect. See here for examples.
