Another strike day

Eben spent most of the day with us, his school being shut for another teachers' strike day. For some time he's wanted to graduate from 'junior' Monopoly to the full-fat version, and so we tried it out today. Here he is, celebrating his victory.  It was all good-humoured; he regards me as a useful sparring partner, while he builds up his skills in advance of a more demanding contest with Jack :-)
The history of the game is fascinating. It was designed by Lizzie Magie in the US in 1903.  The original intention was partly to show up the dangers inherent in concentrating wealth in monopolies. I only learned recently that there were originally two versions, one of which included some rules about taxation that limited the wealth concentration possibilities and illustrated other options. No surprise to discover that this version did not survive as the game became more widespread.
