This is the day

Great excitement

A happy day today for the newly-weds, who walked up to Orrest Head near Windermere at lunchtime. It’s a well-known short climb up from the town to a vantage point which gives wonderful panoramic views of Windermere (the lake) and the majestic Langdale Fells.

Neither of them had done this walk before, but their visit today had a special purpose. We had popped a letter inside their wedding card explaining that we’d been in touch with the Lake District Foundation and had sponsored a bench in their name on the path to Orrest Head, which is where Alfred Wainwright first saw the Langdale fells as a young man, a visit which started his lifelong love affair with the Lake District.

We received an excited text from them with accompanying photographs of themselves sitting on the bench. It’s near a beautiful bluebell wood and has lovely views. A plaque has been attached to it with their initials and the date of their wedding on it, and they are hoping to come up and visit it again next year for their first anniversary.

Later on this evening I tried to take some sunset pictures of the Langdale Pikes from the vantage point of the Founder’s Seat in the centre of the estate (where the proposal took place) but I wasn’t happy with the results. However, this robin alighted on the signpost outside our lodge, just on cue, as I returned, so he’s my blip for today.
